Because the commercial market has now manipulated seeds in various ways, either through hybridisation or that the plants are grown from them either won’t produce seeds again or like in the case of tomatoes, the next generation will be very untasty tomatoes. They want us to be dependent on them to buy seeds. They will also make excuses why we need their seeds. Heirloom seeds are seeds that are collected from generation to generation. What an amazing thing, so much respect.hei
And when we collect our own seeds from generation to generation they will get more and more adapted to our own environment: climate, soil, bacteria etc. They will get stronger and stronger as the years go by.
And not least of all - there are so many more heirloom varieties out there than the limited commercial varieties, tomatoes of all colours, shapes and sizes; Purple broccoli and cauliflower; pink, blue and red corn; beans like you have never seen before. This diversity is of course fun and exciting, but it’s also important for other reasons.
When you have different varieties of a certain vegetable, they will have different qualities and growing patterns. For example, some tomatoes are better eaten fresh, some better dried, or cooked, some will ripen early in the season, some later, some will have longer growing seasons, and some will be more resistant to cold, or more resistant to pests and diseases.
We can choose which varieties we like best, and we can also allow different varieties to cross pollinate, and create whole new varieties. We should have as many unique vegetables as these are unique humans.
Diversity. Seeds inside the fruit. Collect seeds from tomatoes by soaking in water few days, straining, let dry.
